Reduce the amount of fluorine added to the water in the U.S.. U.S.

The Department of Health and Human Services. UU. announced on Friday recommended minimizing the amount of fluoride added to drinking water. This is the first change made in the last 50 years ..

Much of the country's communities put fluoride in public water: it is estimated that today consume this type of additive about 196 million Americans. The trend has existed since 1945: it is considered that the substance prevents tooth decay. Experts from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) report that the extent possible to lower the rate of caries in the population at between 40% and 60%, and commented that for every dollar invested in adding fluoride to the supply of water have saved about $ 38 in dental treatment. In its time the Government described the innovation as one of the most successful public health system of the twentieth century.

Since 1962, the range of the additive advised of fluoride in drinking water is 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter. But now the rule allowed will be limited to 0.7 milligrams per liter. The decision is due to a recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency of the U.S.. UU. (EPA, for its acronym in English), conducted to assess the potential risks for consumers to overdose on fluoride. The study revealed that there is indeed a significant number of minors who are exposed to excessive amounts of the substance.

CDC in its official statement stressed that the main problem is that currently "Americans have access to more sources of fluoride against which they had when the measure was first introduced." Today days the substance is present in toothpaste, mouthwash in and even some children receive supplements, so that the sum total number of cases is more than excessive. They stress that approximately two of every five adolescents between 12 and 15 years old and show their teeth stains caused by overdose of fluoride.

Doctors say that if a person is undergoing the abuse of this substance over a lifetime could lead to more serious damage, such as "increase the chances of bone fractures and cause effects on bone that can cause pain and weakness. " For this reason, officials have chosen to reduce the presence of fluoride in the water.
